Fact

A wealthy French chocolatier named Henri Menier, who bought Anticosti for its hunting and fishing potential in 1895, imported the first white-tailed deer; those original deer have been hard at work ever since, and now exceed 125,000.

From Ste-Flavie, the road cuts southeast down the Matapédia Valley, following the “river of 222 rapids,” which cascades through a deep gorge at the edge of the Chic-Choc Mountains. At the village of Matapédia, 150km (93 miles) south, the road turns northeast and follows the Baie des Chaleurs. Once known as the “Canadian Riviera,” the bay is thankfully too wild and unspoiled to merit the name today. The road weaves among coves and villages, some with English names such as New Carlisle, New Richmond, and Douglastown, given to them by Loyalists who settled here to escape the American War of Independence. Eventually the coast wends northward and meets the red, rocky cliffs where the Chic-Chocs veer down to the sea. The road rounds a curve, and suddenly the massive Percé Rock appears, a 400 million-tonne block of limestone jutting improbably, and almost out of nowhere, from the sea. Roughly oblong in shape, there were once as many as four arches driven by the tides through this treeless crag, which also goes by the name “pierced rock.” Nearby, the bird sanctuary on Ile Bonaventure is home to 50,000 gannets.
